----SEASON 3----

EPISODE 19 - BENEATH THESE STREETS

Nothing says "welcome to the third season" like Splinter starting the episode with beating the crap out of the turtles. Though considering the fact that everyone but Leonardo act like layabouts, maybe they deserved a bigger ass kicking. We get sort of a redux to Enter: The Fly, only this time it's Splinter who ends up comatose due to the Medi-Laser weapon that Shredder steals. This episode also starts to bring in a lot more meta humor, complete with Michelangelo considering changing his catchphrase from "Cowabunga" to "Yabba Dabba Doo". I love how they build up a gas grenade defeating the turtles on break two only for it to be easily deflected. More of that goof Shredder that I'm getting used to. Also, really? We're just going to have a second medi-laser created out of sheer convenience for another fight scene? All right then. This episode's all over the place, but it's a decent way to start the season. ***

ANIMATION ERRORS: Leo speaks through Raph.
DOES APRIL GET KIDNAPPED?: No.
FUNKY FETISHES: Anthropomorphism, Aliens, Ninjas, Robots, Comatose Rats

EPISODE 20 - TURTLES ON TRIAL

Oh great, an episode about a crooked pundit, spreading false claims about the turtles, propagating to a bigoted, angry mob. Really needed to watch an episode like this in 2019. Another thing, those human masks are just wrong. They look like four Festers. This episode stalls a tad to get to the more interesting third act, but I did enjoy the museum fight scene, complete with medieval Michelangelo. Though more importantly, Krang actually gets into some action in this episode, which is a major plus. Also, goof Shredder strikes with his biggest tantrum yet. Not to mention this episode doesn't really end on a happy ending. The slimy pundit, despite being saved by the turtles, still goes on to slander them. Hey, some realism in a cartoon about talking turtles. ***

ANIMATION ERRORS: Raph speaks through Michelangelo.
DOES APRIL GET KIDNAPPED?: Yes, kinda.
FUNKY FETISHES: Anthropomorphism, Aliens, Ninjas, Robots, specifically ED-209

EPISODE 21 - ATTACK OF THE 50 FOOT IRMA

Oh yeah. I remember this one. If there's any singular episode of the show that is vivid in my memory, it's no doubt this one. From the scene where Shredder's body parts grow in improper proportions to everything involving giant Irma. In fact, I might just add a section on the bottom for "Irma Becomes", since that will happen quite a bit. Although I do think giantess will be, for lack of a better term, as high up the list as possible. Overall, this is a fun one for being a sillier take on the "giant attacks the city" concept, going for the more clumsy and aloof Irma as the giant monster of the episode, where the damage she causes is entirely accidental. It's the right kind of silly that TMNT gets into the further down we get. Although, the ending is kinda dumb. I even remember not liking it as a kid. Irma, not being happy with being a giant, with the army about to take her out, has the antidote ready to shrink her back, but decides not to take it because she can only take pills with ice cream? Eh, I can think of worse ways to pad out a climax. A fun use of a worn thin cliche. ****

ANIMATION ERRORS: Raph speaks through Michelangelo.
DOES APRIL GET KIDNAPPED?: Yes, kinda.
IRMA BECOMES: A giantess
FUNKY FETISHES: Anthropomorphism, Aliens, Ninjas, Giants, Car Crushing, Limb Growth

EPISODE 22 - THE MALTESE HAMSTER

Donatello Bogart. That's probably the best way to describe this episode. I actually like the premise of this episode trying to play itself up as a noir mystery story, only with humanoid turtles and gangsters with laser weapons. Also it's a Donatello focused episode, which earns points in my book. Also the explanation of the Maltese Hamster's importance is so peak Turtles silly that it makes this episode better. Not much to say, but it's just a fun episode. ***

ANIMATION ERRORS: Raph and Don trade voices.
DOES APRIL GET KIDNAPPED?: No. Splinter and the other turtles not named Donatello do.
FUNKY FETISHES: Anthropomorphism, Aliens, Ninjas, Gangsters, Detectives, Malta

EPISODE 23 - SKY TURTLES

What's Shredder up to this time? Not much, just playing Gravity God! This was a fun episode. One of the more fun concepts so far in this era of stock story cliches. Not really much to critique. It's not the most action heavy, but the imagery of all the buildings literally floating away is unique, even for this show. Also, Irma's got a kink for the turtles and it's just the best thing. We do get an end joke that is essentially just the opposite diet joke from 50 Foot Irma, though. ****

ANIMATION ERRORS: Nothing substantial.
DOES APRIL GET KIDNAPPED?: No.
IRMA BECOMES: Anti-Gravitational
FUNKY FETISHES: Anthropomorphism, Aliens, Ninjas, Robots, Rhino Feet, Floating

EPISODE 24 - THE OLD SWITCHEROO

Iiiiiit's a body switching episode! I mean, it's still a decent episode. I mean, if you're gonna switch two different characters minds, Splinter and Shredder make the most sense. And compared to a lot of body swap episodes, we have the respective voice actors now having to play their regular characters while having the personality of the different personalities. Extra points to the plot convenience of covering Shredder-Splinter's eyes so he doesn't see where the turtle lair... until they lead him out normally by the end. There I go complaining about 30 year old plot holes again. I also remain interested in Irma's constant failures at her love life.  For a take on this stock plot, it was a pretty great episode. ****

ANIMATION ERRORS: Shredder speaks through Splinter... but not via thoughts.
DOES APRIL GET KIDNAPPED?: Almost.
FUNKY FETISHES: Anthropomorphism, Aliens, Ninjas, Robots, Body Swapping

EPISODE 25 - BURNE'S BLUES

Hey, some focus on Burne, kinda. The incompetence Olympics between Burne and Vernon is quite entertaining. Also, Shredder and Krang's latest scheme of using a powerful freezing substance is one of their more inspired plot concepts lately.  I knew this season had an infamous foot tickling scene, but I didn't think more than one. I didn't think we'd get to the first version of Don Turtelli so soon. Not to mention, while it's been established how April barely gets kidnapped as much as I remembered, wow is she ever a hostage in this one. And this is all before Burne and Vernon get frigging kidnapped by Elvis Aliens! This is definitely one of the crazier, more all over the places episode we've covered so far, yet it's one of the funner episodes in a while. Also, Wolfgang Plink. Screw it, *****

ANIMATION ERRORS: Burne's trenchcoat changes color at one point.
DOES APRIL GET KIDNAPPED?: Yes.
FUNKY FETISHES: Anthropomorphism, Aliens, Ninjas, Robots, Faulty Air Conditioning, Foot Tickling, Old Reporters, Bad Brando Impressions, Freezing, Elvis Impersonations,

Elvis Aliens With a Foot Tickling Fetish.

EPISODE 26 - THE FIFTH TURTLE

Oh right. Zach, the fifth turtle. Definitely an episode I remember. I've never really liked this concept. I get that it's meant to represent the childhood fantasy of being like one of the ninja turtles, but to see it emulated through a whiny kid kinda dampens the deal. This episode interestingly just aired right around the time there began to be issues with kids injuring one another due to Ninja Turtle play fighting. This will be a bigger issue later on, but it's just kinda interesting to see an episode like this. I'll add some extra incompetence to Shredder since he still can't find the Turtle lair, but a 13 year old kid does so with ease. Also, those creepy Fester masks come back. This may be the first episode I just didn't care for. It was far less endearing than what I think they were going for.  *

ANIMATION ERRORS: Somehow Raph and Donatello just get their masks back on after taking off their disguises. More weird continuity than an animation error, but counts.
DOES APRIL GET KIDNAPPED?: No. Zach and the turtles do.
FUNKY FETISHES: Anthropomorphism, Aliens, Ninjas, Robots

EPISODE 27 - ENTER THE RAT KING

It's weird. My memory made me think that the Rat King came earlier than this. Also, 27 episodes in, we have our first Non-Shredder episode. Thankfully, Rat King is still a memorable character despite being just as incompetent as Shredder. I mean, he took the Shredder school of leaving notes on walls. This episode gives us the greatest fourth wall joke so far as Donatello mentions the anti-gravity boots from episode 6 (of this season, which is still technically wrong because the sixth episode to air was The Old Switcheroo, but still wow). Also Irma remains a show MVP, being pivotal in stopping Rat King. Despite moving at a rather slow pace, it picks up around the point when Splinter is hypnotized. A passable way to introduce a new member to the rogues gallery. ***

ANIMATION ERRORS: Donatello's mouth stops moving in one scene
DOES APRIL GET KIDNAPPED?: Yes. Twice.
FUNKY FETISHES: Anthropomorphism, Ninjas, Hypnosis, Rats, Pied Pipers

EPISODE 28 - TURTLES AT THE EARTH'S CORE

Dinosaurs! Also, the show has pretty much gone full "this is a cartoon" mindset with its gags. Michelangelo is far less enthusiastic in this one, not willing to get into the action early on. This episode also has the first case of different Shredder voice. In this case, it's from a couple lines, with Splinter's voice actor Peter Renaday trying hard to sound like James Avery. It's like The Old Switcheroo never ended. This was a fun take on a lost world type storyline. I think I prefer TaleSpin's take more, but this was still great. Not to mention Dippy the Diplodocus is a cute addition to the group. Shredder is just... just embarrassing at this point at how easily he can be beaten. ***

ANIMATION ERRORS: Not an animation error, but Raphael refers to the foot soldiers as "rock soldiers". Rocksteady speaks without moving his mouth.
DOES APRIL GET KIDNAPPED?: Yes, by a pterodactyl at the end of the episode.
FUNKY FETISHES: Anthropomorphism, Ninjas, Aliens, Robots, Dinosaurs, Being Stuck in Tar, What if Penny Met a Dinosaur?

EPISODE 29 - APRIL FOOL

Yep, just as I figured going in. This is a Prince and the Pauper plot, in this case, April and a princess that looks just like her. Which means a case of mistaken identity as April ends up kidnapped instead of the princess. After a lot of cases where she wasn't the damsel, we're really getting into that area more now, huh? Another episode where a diamond is what Shredder and Krang need to power the Technodrome? That's a trend for most of the episodes lately as well. On the plus side, this episode's animation is one of the better ones, mainly due to a lot more unique facial impressions than usual. And I do like April's look overall in this one. Though not in the creepy way the turtles do at least. ***

ANIMATION ERRORS: Nothing substantial
DOES APRIL GET KIDNAPPED?: Yes. Twice.
FUNKY FETISHES: Anthropomorphism, Ninjas, Aliens, Doubles, Masquerade Balls, Giant Hand Sculptures

EPISODE 30 - ATTACK OF BIG MACC

So, Johnny 5 is in this episode. Well, not Johnny 5, but that's essentially the gimmick with MACC. We see Ace Duck for about a couple seconds. Despite being a toy, he never actually appears in the cartoon. Which is a shame, he could have been an interesting character. There is a great 4th wall gag in this one as well as Krang hands Shredder a "Docilator" to control MACC (Shedder: This is something you just happened to have lying around, right? Krang: We've got to keep the story moving). In fact, this episode has some great Shredder lines overall. I will say there's some plot convenience with the first docilator not working so Krang has a second, more powerful version, but again. Plot holes. I do like the added concern of MACC essentially turning into an unstable bomb. For some decent writing and a more engaging plot overall than some of the more recent ones, this gets ****.

ANIMATION ERRORS: Donatello speaks through Leonardo
DOES APRIL GET KIDNAPPED?: No.
FUNKY FETISHES: Anthropomorphism, Ninjas, Aliens, Robots, Cowboy Impressions

EPISODE 31 - THE NINJA SWORD OF NOWHERE

We had a small sampling of wrong sounding characters with Turtles at the Earth's Core, but this is our first full episode with a wrong turtle. In this case Thom Pinto replaces Rob Paulsen for today's episode. And it's... it's not good. I remember not liking it as a kid and that hasn't changed. It's just alien and weird. Made worse when the four wear trench coats and look the same. Plot wise, this is one of the better ones in a while as Shredder manages to possess an alien sword that lets him disappear at will, leading to a battle between Shredder and Splinter in the back of beyond, leaving Splinter temporarily trapped in limbo. More importantly, Krang is a soap opera fan, whodathunk? I will say the mental image of Shredder letting Bebop sit on his lap to drive is too funny even for this show. Also, was Vernon literally going to bite a dog? ****

ANIMATION ERRORS:  Nothing substantial.
DOES APRIL GET KIDNAPPED?: No. Splinter does.
FUNKY FETISHES: Anthropomorphism, Ninjas,  Aliens, Sword Wielding, Alien Pawn Shop Owners

EPISODE 32 - 20,000 LEAKS UNDER THE CITY

And we go from wrong Raphael to wrong Donatello and Bebop. Only in this case, Greg Berg is a far more decent replacement, still retaining some of the nerdy vibe that Barry Gordon offers, and his Bebop is pretty close too. Won't be the last time we see this replacement in the next eps. Also, the opening of this episode with the turtle boat is one of the most toyetic bits in a while, especially since it doesn't actually play into this episode beyond this point. In an episode involving water.. Plot of the episode, as if the title didn't suggest it, sees Krang attempt to flush the turtles out of the sewers, as well as flood New York via a super ocean pump. Also, Burne's girlfriend Tiffany returns... for the last time. This episode more than the others made me like Burne a bit more, given his birthday woes. Not to mention that the Channel 6 crew feel like a weird, dysfunctional family of sorts. Right down to making Vernon go underwater after trying to sacrifice Irma. Now that's actually funny. Some fun action scenes including a shark and a squid make for a really enjoyable episode that isn't as water-logged as you'd think. ****

ANIMATION ERRORS:  Nothing substantial.
DOES APRIL GET KIDNAPPED?: No.
FUNKY FETISHES: Anthropomorphism, Ninjas,  Aliens, 50th Birthdays, Tentacles

EPISODE 33 - TAKE ME TO YOUR LEADER

After feeling like he's failed as a leader, Leonardo quits the Ninja Turtles. We open with one of Shredder's weirdest frigging plot yet, to wipe out bakeries and cheese danishes. I mean, it's a dream sequence, but it's so damn bizarre that it might be the best opening for any episode. Shredder's actual plan is to create a second ice age, which does remind me of that one level in Turtles II on the NES. Right down to a (non-leather jacket wearing) polar bear. More great meta writing as Shredder wanted to be a writer first, with being a villain as his second choice. Honestly, the joke writing is getting better as the plots are getting thinner. The episode does a good enough job in enforcing Leonardo's role as leader, mainly by making the other three even more incompetent. Also, there is like a weird slavery joke in this one that's both clever and out of place. Some logic errors aside (mainly a bomb with a ten second timer that takes about 30 seconds to dispose of), this was a good episode. ****

ANIMATION ERRORS:  Nothing substantial.
DOES APRIL GET KIDNAPPED?: No.
FUNKY FETISHES: Anthropomorphism, Ninjas,  Aliens, Robots, Freezing

EPISODE 34 - FOUR MUSKETURTLES

It's an amnesia episode! Know what I really don't miss? Amnesia episodes. Mainly because they were massively played out, but I dunno, making light of brain damage seems a bit icky in hindsight. Case in point, Leonardo takes a blow to the head and thinks he's D'Artagnan of the three musketeers. So, the turtles have to humor him until he gets his memory back. Also, Greg Berg returns as Donatello, and he sounds worse here. Oh look, another jewel that Krang wants Shredder to steal. On the plus side, cool to see other members of Krang's race in the flashback. I guess the moral of the story is to read a book? It's a dumb episode with dumb decisions, but it had some fun moments. **

ANIMATION ERRORS:  Nothing substantial.
DOES APRIL GET KIDNAPPED?: Yes. Irma does as well. Very willingly.
IRMA BECOMES: A jewel thief.
FUNKY FETISHES: Anthropomorphism, Ninjas,  Amnesia, Musketeers

EPISODE 35 - TURTLES, TURTLES, EVERYWHERE

Save me from the wee turtles! They were too quick for me! Shredder's plot of the episode: reprogram computerized garbage trucks to capture the ninja turtles. However, he accidentally tells the main program DUMP-1000 to capture all turtles. That's definitely an episode plot. I guess if there is a lesson here it's to clean up your messes? Not much commentary here. This is the most "an episode" episode in a while. **

ANIMATION ERRORS:

A weird cut adds more turtles around Shredder.
DOES APRIL GET KIDNAPPED?: Yes. And Donatello.
FUNKY FETISHES: Anthropomorphism, Ninjas,  Aliens, Lots of Turtles

EPISODE 36 - COWABUNGA SHREDHEAD

So, get this. Shredder gets blasted with a ton of info on Michelangelo and thinks he's Michelangelo. That is easily one of the best plot concepts yet. Can I just say that there is some good animation in this one, depending on the shot? Like, surprisingly fluid for this show. Also, James Avery's Shreddelangelo as I've dubbed him is amazing. God I miss that man. You could question the ethics of hypnosis on Shredder by the Turtles and Splinter, but it works to properly pad the plot. Con though, is an episode where Townsend Coleman voices Krang instead of Pat Fraley and it's pretty bad. But even Coleman admits it was a bad take. Honestly, this is one of the best episodes for its bizarre plot and great animation. A high recommend *****

ANIMATION ERRORS:  Raph speaks through Leo.
DOES APRIL GET KIDNAPPED?: No. The actual Michelangelo does though.
FUNKY FETISHES: Anthropomorphism, Ninjas, Aliens, Amnesia, Mind Control, Jeff Spicoli-Isms

EPISODE 37 - INVASION OF THE TURTLE SNATCHERS

This is another really well animated episode. I much approve of this more fluid looking era that will no doubt disappear soon. It's another episode where Krang needs a power source, but it's at least packed with a more interesting plot overall, which sees a brief yet unlikely alliance between Donatello and Rocksteady as they deal with an alien family named Klaatu, Barada and Nikto (Clever). This show seems to be going for an Irma/Donatello ship and I don't know what to think. But then again Irma is that desperate. Also, Burne and Vernon are surprisingly more dickish than normal. There's also a rather great gag as April goes to give Burne a piece of her mind, only to beg for her job. She also saves the day at the end, which is a plus. A fun cutaway I thought the episode title would mean a full body snatcher plot, which I would have preferred, but this is still a solid episode. ****

ANIMATION ERRORS:  Krang vanishes from his walker.
DOES APRIL GET KIDNAPPED?: Yes, kinda. Donatello, Rocksteady and Splinter do as well.
FUNKY FETISHES: Anthropomorphism, Ninjas, Aliens, Robots, Holograms. Alien Abductions, Alien Vacations

EPISODE 38 - CAMERA BUGGED

More aliens? So soon? It must be my birthday. Unfortunately, it's an Ed Wynn tourist. Frip the Poliarisoid, who sucks things into his camera. The plot is interesting, but kinda gets good old Turtle silly with the case of mistaken cameras. April ends up taking the wrong camera after a Shredder scuffle with the turtles. One of the more inspired plots in a while, not to mention some great lines ("Hey, violence sells"). The camera world does provide a good bit of set pieces. The solution to wrap things up is a bit silly, but works for this show. Thought I was gonna dislike this one, but it ended up being more fun than expected. Also points for literal Barney Fife. ****

ANIMATION ERRORS:  Nothing substantial.
DOES APRIL GET KIDNAPPED?: No, but practically everyone else gets caught in the camera.
FUNKY FETISHES: Anthropomorphism, Ninjas, Aliens, Alien Tourists

EPISODE 39 - GREEN WITH JEALOUSY

It's the other Townsend Coleman Krang episode! And it's even worse here because Krang is way more prominent in this episode. Oh dear! But enough about that, this is another "ship Irma with the turtles" episode as Shredder and Krang poison the turtles with a love potion (well, all but Donatello). This of course means that Michelangelo, Leonardo and Raphael are more out to destroy each other than Shredder's plan. This is another episode with some solid animation in places. On the downside, this is another "We need energy for the Technodrome" episode. But trying to steal energy from a nuclear sub is more interesting than stealing another jewel. This one was a silly episode that I enjoyed more than expected. Bad Krang voice and all. Irma remains the MVP of this show. ***

ANIMATION ERRORS:  Leonardo and Donatello swap voices.
DOES APRIL GET KIDNAPPED?: Yes. By a love potioned Rocksteady
IRMA BECOMES: The unintentional object of turtle affection.
FUNKY FETISHES: Anthropomorphism, Ninjas, Aliens, Robots, Love Potions

EPISODE 40 - RETURN OF THE FLY

Baxter's back, all right! Actually, this is a villain-o-rama as we have all our established villains so far in this one. Shredder, Krang, Bebop, Rocksteady, Baxter and even The Rat King. Baxter is still naive as hell, falling for Shredder's lies just like before. Also, it's a Greg Berg Donatello episode. A pity that keeps happening. Another pity is that we have another "Power the Technodrome" plot. Another toyetic addition of the catapult, which we won't see until another episode much like the Turtle Boat. But thankfully there's some great moments including Bebop and Rocksteady trying to control their tempers via a self help tape. This also marks what I believe is Michelangelo's first notable use of a grappling hook (aside from when they all use one). I believe this is just around the time of the controversy, but I'll get more into that later. Major points to Rat King having a rat named "Mickey" ("We all have our role models.")This one takes some time to build, but otherwise, this is a good episode. ***

ANIMATION ERRORS:  Nothing substantial.
DOES APRIL GET KIDNAPPED?: Yes.
FUNKY FETISHES: Anthropomorphism, Ninjas, Aliens,

EPISODE 41 - CASEY JONES - OUTLAW HERO

We finally get Casey Jones in the series. A lot later than I remember. I'm guessing because this show aired weekdays, that the passage of time for episodes felt quicker to young me than in this rewatch. This version of Casey is more of a Dirty Harry who wears sporting goods, right down to propensity for puns and is incredibly insane. Shredder and Krang's plan this time is bugs that can control machinery, leading to a new version of the knucklehead. At least it's a reprieve from powering the Technodrome. It also gives us more of a story to follow instead of just dealing with Casey being crazy for 22+ minutes. There is also the most WTF forth wall breaking joke in this show so far as Raph literally responds to April in another scene. A bit of a busy episode, but a good way to debut Casey Jones. ***

ANIMATION ERRORS:  Nothing substantial.
DOES APRIL GET KIDNAPPED?: No.
FUNKY FETISHES: Anthropomorphism, Ninjas, Aliens, Robots, Clint Eastwood Impressions

EPISODE 42 - MUTAGEN MONSTER

It's been a while since we've gotten a giant monster attack in this show. In this case, a giant mutant bull that turns into two mutant bulls, then back into one. Although the creation of the mutagen by crashing two chemical trains together is silly, even for this show. This means a more action-heavy episode over the more gimmicky episodes of late. Another Greg Berg Donatello ep. I'm getting more used to it after what is like, the fourth episode. An okay episode, but nothing too crazy. This episode also gets in a lot of cow-related jokes including "Where's The Beef", five years after its expiration date. ***

ANIMATION ERRORS:  Nothing substantial.
DOES APRIL GET KIDNAPPED?: No.
FUNKY FETISHES: Anthropomorphism, Ninjas, Aliens, Mutants

EPISODE 43 - CORPORATE RAIDERS FROM DIMENSION X

Wow. Another Casey appearance already. That was faster than expected. Also, in classic Casey form, he stops vandalism by causing even more vandalism. Also, this is the eighties and we're going full Corporate as corporate heads are being randomly kidnapped. I love how the turtles is like "screw this, we don't have to get involved" until there's a pizza shortage. In one of the show's greatest moments of weirdness, we have Casey pretending to be a corporate guy, while still wearing the mask and sports gear. I love this dumb cartoon. Also, they actually use the catapult from a previous episode, a lot.

We're getting super toyetic now. I mean we already were, but it's even more blatant.

After a pretty bland episode last time, it's good to be back to good old Turtle wackiness. Plus one of the funniest meta endings about how corporations are scum. I approve. ****

ANIMATION ERRORS:  There's a bad shot where nobody moves, but Leonardo's voice goes on. Raph talks through Leo. Raph also speaks without moving his mouth. This episode may be great, but it's the most error-laden ep in a while.
DOES APRIL GET KIDNAPPED?: No.
FUNKY FETISHES: Anthropomorphism, Ninjas, Aliens, Robots, Big Corporations, Resume Tampering, Hypnosis

EPISODE 44 - PIZZA BY THE SHRED

This is definitely one I remember. Michelangelo takes a side job as a delivery boy to get a belly board. And, of course, he ends up a pizza delivery boy for Shredder. Although this brings up the question on just how the turtles make money when they don't do jobs besides being ninjas, which I don't believe is a job that earns them rewards. We get a plot where Shredder uses a homing anchovy to find the turtle lair, but of course it ends up with The Rat King through some convoluted situations. It's also good to see the Neutrino's car being used again, without the need for Neutrinos. There's a few good gags in this one as well. How the turtles keep getting glimpses of Shredder (hands, eyes, voice) and can't clue in, yet not in a "characters being too dumb" way. Plus, the turtle boat gets used. This one holds up. ****

ANIMATION ERRORS:  Nothing substantial.
DOES APRIL GET KIDNAPPED?: No. Surprisingly Rat King just kidnaps the pizza.
FUNKY FETISHES: Anthropomorphism, Ninjas, Aliens, Robots, Pizza Deliveries

EPISODE 45 - SUPER BEBOP AND MIGHTY ROCKSTEADY

Another one I vividly remember. Great piece of meta humor early on with Shredder bringing up the exposition on the mesmerizer, a device that hypnotizes the human race. After failing for the hundredth time or so, Krang decides to replace Bebop and Rocksteady with robots. But these versions are surprisingly just as stupid. Some good cases of Shredder looking like a goof, especially after the mesmerizer causes the Channel 6 crew mentally warps everyone into children. Another great meta gag from Donatello saying that he's a ninja, not a cartoon writer. There's some peak Bebop and Rocksteady stupidity to the point that you really have no idea why Shredder and Krang keep them around. Another fun episode. ****

ANIMATION ERRORS:  Nothing substantial.
DOES APRIL GET KIDNAPPED?: No.
IRMA BECOMES: A Child, a Dog and a Monkey.
FUNKY FETISHES: Anthropomorphism, Ninjas, Aliens, Robots, Child-Like Mentalities, Dog and Monkey Hypnosis

EPISODE 46 - BEWARE THE LOTUS

This is definitely one I don't remember too well. Or at the very least don't remember Lotus, who is bad ass. But then again anyone can beat Shredder with ease as we've seen so far, so her exhibition is impressive, but not that much. God bless Krang, he's an equal opportunity tyrant. Not to mention the episode does a fine enough job in building Lotus' back story. The episode also definitely ships Leonardo and Lotus, which I guess makes sense considering their swordsmanship. This also works well with the side story about April having to report on love. All while Shredder, Bebop and Rocksteady watch on hoping both sides destroy one another. This episode is action packed and surprisingly cute. Giving it ****

ANIMATION ERRORS:  Bebop speaks through Rocksteady.
DOES APRIL GET KIDNAPPED?: No.
FUNKY FETISHES: Anthropomorphism, Ninjas, Aliens, Robots, Florists, Turtle-Ninja Relationships.

EPISODE 47 - BLAST FROM THE PAST

It's an amnesia episode! Again! Already! And it's also a clip show! OH NO! Splinter gets amnesia not from a blow to the head, but by knockout gas somehow. Shredder tries to use the spirit of the foot clan creator to give Bebop and Rocksteady powers. But since he's not the true leader of the clan, he can't do so. The animation again looks really good for the new footage provided. But that's the biggest fault of this episode. A good percentage of it recaps the events from season one. Cool if you want a trip down turtle memory lane, but still not exactly worth sitting through. Why does this feel more like the case of an unfinished episode resorting to old footage to pad it out? Also apparently this is the final Townsend Coleman Krang. Hallelujah. So, why does this get three stars?

THE DAMN CUR-LEE MANEUVER COMPLETE WITH THREE STOOGES MUSIC! ***

ANIMATION ERRORS:  There appears to be a scene missing with the turtles breaking down the door Bebop and Rocksteady are holding.
DOES APRIL GET KIDNAPPED?: Not in the new footage.
FUNKY FETISHES: Anthropomorphism, Ninjas, Aliens, Robots, Giants, Amnesia, Clip Shows, Three Stooges.

EPISODE 48 - LEATHERHEAD TERROR OF THE SWAMP

I said it before. I'll say it again. I swear this episode aired much earlier. It's the debut of Leatherhead, which also means we have Jim Cummings in the show now.  Speaking of voice actors, it's Shredder's turn to have a replacement voice actor for this episode. Dorian Harewood takes over for this one. And he's fine. Not a scratch on James Avery, but fine. Oh, and another Greg Berg Donatello ep. It's also the return of the punk frogs. Still not with any differing characteristics, but still fun to have here. I also like the episode's addition of mutagen-covered water, which gives Michelangelo a renewed vigor. Also, Shredder gets turned into a toddler, which is pretty effed up, even for this show. Episode's pace takes a massive dive mid-way, and gets way busy with the fountain of youth stuff, but it's a great way to debut Leatherhead, I guarantee. Also, we're officially one fourth done of the series! Yay? ***

ANIMATION ERRORS:  Nothing Substantial
DOES APRIL GET KIDNAPPED?: Yes, briefly with the turtles.
FUNKY FETISHES: Anthropomorphism, Ninjas, Aliens, Mutants, Cajun Accents, Quicksand, Fountains of Youth.

EPISODE 49 - THE TURTLE TERMINATOR

It's time for a Terminator reference. Or, in this case an Irminator reference. Our villain this time is a T-800 style robot that disguises itself as Irma. Thom Pinto is back as Raph and it's still the 2nd worse replacement voice. Thankfully, this is also the last Thom Pinto Raph episode. Also at this frigging point I'm just used to Donatello being voiced by Greg Berg. Feels like forever and a half it's been consistently Barry Gordon. The animation in this episode feels very rubbery than usual. Not as dynamic as episodes prior, but still extremely noticeable. I dunno why, but the fact that Shredder knows Irma by name is kinda hilarious to me and I don't know why. Irma has been my MVP of this show, and I love her overly comical clumsiness. Plus a super powered robot Irma is just as major an MVP. Also Irma kinda gets attracted to her robot self. I love this nutjob. Jennifer Darling is in top form in this episode. This is that good old crazy TMNT that I love so much. ***

ANIMATION ERRORS:  There is a really bad series of still images when Irma steps on Shredder's foot. Still shots have been used before, but this is a bad one. Another character speaks through Vernon.
DOES APRIL GET KIDNAPPED?: No. Irma does though.
IRMA BECOMES: A T-800.
FUNKY FETISHES: Anthropomorphism, Ninjas, Aliens, Mutants, Robots, Terminators, Repeated Foot Stomping.

EPISODE 50 - THE GRYBYX

We go from Terminator to Gremlins. And unfortunately it's also a Neutrinos episode (and yes, they are still trying to ship Kala/Michelangelo). In this case, a creature that can levitate items with its thoughts. Plus, he becomes more monstrous after being fed, not to mention that it shrinks back after getting wet. A plus to this episode is after a long time, we finally have all the right voices. Not to mention it's been a while that we've had a "raise the Technodrome" episode. This was fine, but not one of the more interesting episodes in a bit. **

ANIMATION ERRORS:  Rocksteady speaks through Bebop.
DOES APRIL GET KIDNAPPED?: No.
FUNKY FETISHES: Anthropomorphism, Ninjas, Aliens, Robots, Gremlins.

EPISODE 51 - MICHELANGELO'S BIRTHDAY

The ninja turtles get turned into balloons. I'm beginning to suspect this show isn't meant to be taken seriously. Doesn't help that this has one my least favorite plot ideas. Someone who is celebrating a birthday, but everyone ignores their birthday, which hurts the birthday person's feelings, which makes the person run away. Oh, but it was all a ruse as they were going to throw a party later. Just really cliche and annoying. This entire episode is at least saved by good old turtle weirdness, case in point the balloon turtles, but it's so cliche that I just can't give it much thought besides. Although Rocksteady saying the turtles must have seen this episode before is pretty funny.

Though we do get another toyetic moment with the flushomatic. **

ANIMATION ERRORS:

What even is this posture?
DOES APRIL GET KIDNAPPED?: No.
FUNKY FETISHES: Anthropomorphism, Ninjas, Aliens, Robots, Inflation, Birthday Ignorance.

EPISODE 52 - THE MAKING OF METALHEAD

I guess Krang has learned nothing from creating robots to defeat the turtles, because it's always a sure fire failure. But this is a robot ninja turtle, so surely this'll be the winner. Meanwhile the turtles are sick and they are some whiny brats. Dorian Harewood is Shredder again, so we're not out of the wrong voice woods yet. Speaking of voices, it is neat that Metalhead shares all the voices of the turtles when he gets reprogrammed.  A fun action-filled ep. ****

ANIMATION ERRORS:  A few poorly placed frozen shots.
DOES APRIL GET KIDNAPPED?: No.
FUNKY FETISHES: Anthropomorphism, Ninjas, Aliens, Robots, Colds.

EPISODE 53 - USAGI YOJIMBO

This is the debut of Donatello's dimensional portal, which will get a lot of play in future episodes. And for its debut, we're introduced to beloved bunny samurai Usagi Yojimbo. Usagi's a likable character, if not a bit dim. But considering the whole culture shock, it makes sense. Points to the meta humor in this one (Raph: He's not only from medieval Japan, but also from an alternate universe. So, of course, he speaks English).  Remember General Tragg and the rock soldiers? It's been so long even I almost forgot. Also Irma, stop being bigoted to mutants. Shredder's plan also involves a portal machine of his own so he can hatch a giant dragon. It's fresher than usual at least. This is a fun episode, mainly for Usagi, who I wish had a longer shelf life on the show than he did. ***

ANIMATION ERRORS:
Raphael ends up with Donatello's colors

DOES APRIL GET KIDNAPPED?: No.
FUNKY FETISHES: Anthropomorphism, Ninjas, Aliens, Robots, Rock Warriors, Samurai Rabbits.

EPISODE 54 - THE CASE OF THE HOT KIMONO

Oh how I have been waiting to talk about this one. I mean, the episode itself is nothing special. We meet April's aunt who is an Agatha Christie style detective. And the plot is that Splinter's kimono has had a treasure map written on it this entire time, because of course. But I've been wanting so badly to finally talk about Don Turtelli. We got a version of him back at Burne's Blues, but this is the episode where he gets his correct look and is given more time for his foot tickling fetish. And I go silly on the fetish stuff in the bottom of each episode review, but let's be honest, this WAS someone's fetish when this got written. Bless this weird, weird cartoon. Just as weird is the fact that there seem to be a lot of kimonos in New York. My increasing expertise in voice actors nailed that Agatha Marbles was voiced by Joan Gerber. I know classic Mrs. Beakley when I hear it. No Shredder in this one, but screw it. this is a fun episode. ***

ANIMATION ERRORS:  Donatello speaks through Leonardo... in the same scene Leonardo speaks. That's fresh. Raph speaks through him too. Bad day for Leonardo apparently.
DOES APRIL GET KIDNAPPED?: OH YEAH. Vernon too.
FUNKY FETISHES: Anthropomorphism, Ninjas, Gangsters, Foot Tickling.

EPISODE 55 - USAGI COME HOME

Two episodes later and we've already seen the return of Usagi Yojimbo. Unfortunately, this is also the last appearance. Actually, this episode feels like a direct second part to the previous episode, which was weirdly not aired directly after. Usagi's overt honor comes to play in this episode as he ends up being manipulated by Shredder. I quite enjoyed the Usagi/Shredder fight, just on the grounds on Shredder being such a cheatin' prick. This does lead to some other great fight scenes as Usagi takes on the turtles. Meanwhile, Bebop and Rocksteady are stealing tons of fuel for the Technodrome. This was a really good conclusion to the Usagi saga. ***

ANIMATION ERRORS: Leo speaks through Raph. Leo speaks through Donatello.
DOES APRIL GET KIDNAPPED?: No.
FUNKY FETISHES: Anthropomorphism, Ninjas, Aliens, Samurai Rabbits.

EPISODE 56 - LEATHERHEAD MEETS THE RAT KING

Episode plot sees Rat King capture Leatherhead while also working on a formula that turns people into rats. Leatherhead eventually escapes and continues his plans for revenge on the turtles. Rat King's plan, despite the buildup, is surprisingly a big failure. Meanwhile, the turtles learn how to work in pairs. Hell, this feels like the least turtle-centric episode yet. I mean, a good chunk of the first and second act don't even feature them. But their involvement does contain a rather fun scene of Michelangelo losing it when his pizza gets ruined. I guess it's not too good to see the chillest turtle lose his chill. Also, Shredder and co. are here... in cardboard form. This one was a bit busy, but it was still a fun episode. ****

ANIMATION ERRORS: Donatello speaks through Raph... I think? Raph and Donatello's mouths move at the same time in one scene.
DOES APRIL GET KIDNAPPED?: Yes. And Vernon. And Irma.
IRMA BECOMES: Almost a zombie.
FUNKY FETISHES: Anthropomorphism, Ninjas, Aliens, Mutations

EPISODE 57 - THE GANG'S ALL HERE

Michelangelo becomes a human thanks to mutagen cookies from Shredder and April dresses up like a street punk. That's pretty much the gist of it. Though it is interesting that for the first time in the series, one of the turtles actually wants to be human. Of the four, Michelangelo feels like the most believable choice. Meanwhile, Bebop and Rocksteady team up with their old gang to steal a shipping freight. Not so much the gang from the pilot episodes, but still a gang nonetheless. Also, how exactly did the Turtles know what Michelangelo's human form looked like, when they never saw him in that form? I enjoyed this one. Good old turtle wackiness that still leads to a compelling enough story. ***

ANIMATION ERRORS: Donatello speaks through Leonardo in the same scene Leonardo talks. Michelangelo's teenager costume vanishes when he transforms in one scene, despite not doing so in others.
DOES APRIL GET KIDNAPPED?: Yes.
FUNKY FETISHES: Anthropomorphism, Ninjas, Aliens, Street Gangs, Turtle-to-Human Mutations.

EPISODE 58 - THE MISSING MAP

Aw crap. Zach's back. And even worse, so is his even more annoying older brother Walt. How did they get the picture of the turtles in their pre-mutated baby form? I know, I KNOW, asking too much again. Plot this time conveniently brings up evidence that could reinstate Splinter into the Foot Clan. Although, all Shredder did was stick a knife in the back of Splinter's kimono to keep him from bowing. It's not as deep as the show makes it out to be. It also conveniently has the map to the Turtle lair, so it's double necessary to Shredder. This episode is supposed to try and make us sympathize with Walt for not being as heroic as Zach, but nope. He's just a whiny sack of crap. Also for as much as Krang brings up Shredder being incompetent, he has a hard time dealing with Zach screwing around in the Technodrome. This episode is a little better than Zach's first appearance, but that's not saying much. *

ANIMATION ERRORS: Some noticeable screen freezing. Leonardo speaks through Raph.
Leoangelo.
DOES APRIL GET KIDNAPPED?: No
FUNKY FETISHES: Anthropomorphism, Ninjas, Aliens

EPISODE 59 - THE GREAT BOLDINI

Two Zach episodes in a row? What, am I being punished? Wait, there's another kid character we've never met named Caitlyn (who never appears again after this episode BTW)? Are the turtles just letting any kid into their sewers now?  Also, this is another episode with Don Turtelli and... Oh no, he's not going to foot tickle the kids is he? Oh god, he does! maybe it's a good thing this is his last appearance. Anyway, this plot involves Michelangelo wanting to be a magician, while they also have to deal with a magician jewel thief. Also, Rat King is here because. There's a scene in this episode where the Irish cop mistakes the turtles for leprechauns and I've barely cringed much in this binge but hooooly crap. This is the definition of mediocre. *

ANIMATION ERRORS: Donatello speaks through Leonardo. Michelangelo speaks through Raph. Raph performs ventriloquism.
Don Turtelli grabs Caitlyn, but the next shot clearly shows him grabbing Zach.

DOES APRIL GET KIDNAPPED?: No.
FUNKY FETISHES: Anthropomorphism, Ninjas, Magicians, Rats, Gangsters, Foot Tickling.

EPISODE 60 - MISTER OGG GOES TO TOWN

I covered this episode for Tooncrap ages ago and I still hate everything about this one. What happens when you get Mr. Mxyzptlk, give him a high pitched voice and a Pee Wee Herman laugh? One of the most obnoxious characters in this series. God, I'll take Zach back! Plot this time sees Shredder and Krang bring the obnoxious porcelain-eating being named Mr. Ogg from Dimension-Z to Earth. He causes nonsense to take out the turtles. I've barely mentioned the turtle disguises, but this episode has them in suits while just wearing their masks. It's super lazy. Boy, this is just a hat trick of horrible. Please tell me we're getting out of this void of sadness. *

ANIMATION ERRORS: Nothing Substantial
DOES APRIL GET KIDNAPPED?: No.
FUNKY FETISHES: Anthropomorphism, Ninjas, Aliens, Squeaky-Voiced Annoyances

EPISODE 61 - SHREDDERVILLE

Alternate universe episode! Cool! An "it was all a dream" episode! Bad! The turtles question if the world would be better if they hadn't beaten Shredder. Sure enough, they enter a world where Shredder is now in charge of the world, which leads to a darker version of New York named Shredderville. Downside, this isn't a James Avery Shredder ep, he would have made this more fun. It's neat to see Rocksteady and Bebop's human forms again. Also, Irma and April are harem girls and I can only imagine that too was someone's fetish making the screen. It's amazing, even as leader of the world, Shredder's whiny and useless. This episode has some issues (ZACH), but it's probably one of the strongest concepts we've seen for this show in a while. ****

ANIMATION ERRORS: Nothing Substantial
DOES APRIL GET KIDNAPPED?: No.
IRMA BECOMES:
A Harem Girl.
FUNKY FETISHES: Anthropomorphism, Ninjas, Aliens, Alternate Universes, Harem Girls, Crocodile Dundee Impressions, Mickey Mouse Ears, On-The-Nose X-Men References, Even More On-The-Nose Wizard of Oz References.

EPISODE 62 - BYE BYE FLY

Baxter's back! All... Oh yeah, already made that pun. Baxter finds a mysterious temple beneath the city, which also hosts a highly advanced spaceship. Another Dorian Harewood Shredder ep. This is the last one to feature his voice though. I like that the episode brings up just how many holes in the ground that the modules have made. Another "power the Technodrome", but at least this one involves a Baxter trap. How do the turtles play into this? The archaeologists might end up digging close to their lair.

Also another toyetic scene involving the Foot Skis and Donatello's newest aquatic weapons, right down to Raphael saying that they're awesome. The most blatant one so far.

We also get the mutagen ray, which means that Shredder gets turned into a fly, only like a full on fly unlike Baxter. And to give us something for the third act, we have Michelangelo turned into a gerbil. Speaking of Baxter, at least this time he isn't easily manipulated. Another really busy episode, but a really entertaining episode nonetheless. ***

ANIMATION ERRORS: This one gets hella choppy in places.
DOES APRIL GET KIDNAPPED?: No.
FUNKY FETISHES: Anthropomorphism, Ninjas, Aliens, HAL-9000, Mutations, Toy Commercials, The Fly References, French Chef Robots

EPISODE 63 - THE BIG RIP OFF

What's this? A three plot story? After all this time? Points to this show for even calling out that The Technodrome is after a power source nearly every episode. Michelangelo is such a great character. But, sure enough, that's our plot this time. With the Technodrome pretty much about to fall into lava, they literally need a power source ASAP. In this case, it's a high security power plant. Or at least trick the turtles into thinking they're stealing that power source, while they get some somewhere else. Another plot we've seen before involving a supercomputer being reprogrammed by Shredder. Added points for just how much of a scumbag Vernon is. Seemingly happy about April almost dying if it means he takes her position at Channel 6. For the first part in this three part story, it's a decent start, but I'll admit to zoning out on this one. On the plus side, Rochsteady and Bebop... succeeded? Now that is the most unbelievable thing this show's done yet. Congrats, Shredder. You really are that useless. ***

ANIMATION ERRORS: Leo speaks through Raph, twice. Some considerable choppiness
DOES APRIL GET KIDNAPPED?: Yes
FUNKY FETISHES: Anthropomorphism, Ninjas, Aliens

EPISODE 64 - THE BIG BREAK IN

Part two of this three part story sees the Technodrome finally powered up after 45 episodes of constant failure. And to ensure their entry back to the surface, Krang also uses a minimizer that shrinks armies. Gotta admit, at least he had a plan readied for quite a while. This one moves pretty slow, but that usually feels like the case for second parts to trilogies. If anything, it shows just how big the interior of the Technodrome is. The place is massive. Doesn't hurt that this episode does have some fun fight scenes involving Krang and the Foot Clan. In the end, it's a good way to continue this three parter. ***

ANIMATION ERRORS: Some bad screen freezing. Leo speaks through Raph.
DOES APRIL GET KIDNAPPED?:No
FUNKY FETISHES: Anthropomorphism, Ninjas, Aliens, Shrinking

EPISODE 65 - THE BIG BLOW OUT

I can't believe it. We've finally reached the season finale for Season Three. I can't believe it myself. We immediately start where we left off as the Technodrome returns to the surface. This time, trying to gain more power to create a portal to Dimension X. Gotta admit, I had a case of the collar tug when they got to the World Trade Center. It's good to see Splinter involved in this episode as well. However, we also get the whiniest Shredder in a while when he's denied a chance to fight Splinter. So, where does the Technodrome end up this time? Back in Dimension X of course. And it only makes sense that their failure is once again thanks to Shredder being an idiot. The pacing is a bit sloppy in this one, but for a season finale, it was pretty great. Honestly, this could have been a great way to end the series. But, as you can see, this is episode 65... of 197! ****

ANIMATION ERRORS: Donatello speaks through Michelangelo.
DOES APRIL GET KIDNAPPED?: No
FUNKY FETISHES: Anthropomorphism, Ninjas, Aliens

Season Three was quite the interesting season. While the quality of the show does finally dip into one star territory, there were thankfully a lot of good to average episodes this season. We've definitely entered the sillier era of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, a show now handcuffed in really using the weapons of the turtles, namely Michelangelo's nunchacku. I thought this was a thing that started with CBS, but nope. This was the season that introduced the infamous grappling hook. This was mainly due to a few factors, mainly the release in the UK "Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles". Due to an actual issue involving ninjas, the term was taboo for a while. Also taboo were the nunchucks, and as such, the show had to edit out any major use of them. But since TMNT was the biggest hit at the time, a compromise had to be made. Enter the grappling hook. But I don't fully lament the loss of the chucks. At least Michelangelo's fun character is strong enough to make it not feel like a detriment.

In the end, Season Three was fine. It was hurt by a lot of things. The bigger drop in animation quality overtime and the barrage of replacement voice actors. But I do appreciate that we still got a lot of memorable moments of turtle wackiness. From giant Irma to Shreddelangelo to the fever dream that is Burne's Blues. It's my least favorite season at this point just due to the insane length of it, but that still means it's third place currently, with Season One and Season Two taking silver and gold. But more importantly, the show hits the magic 65 episode number. Even though it was already syndicated, now they could air that many episodes forever in syndication and really not need any new episodes. But, as we know, a lot more came, and the syndication era came to an end much quicker than expected. So, next up we're covering the slightly less long Season Four. Barring any other major event happened before then...

TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES: THE MOVIE - 1990

Oh. Right. That. We're gonna sidebar right before we get to season four, as in May of 1990, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles made its way to the big screen with their 1990 film debut. And since I can't turn down a reason to watch this movie, I feel it's worth bringing up on this binge. You know, considering we live in an age where anything gets made into a movie, it's still surprising that this movie technically counts as an independent film that none of the big companies wanted, and thus was a production of Golden Harvest. It blows my mind as well that this movie is almost thirty years old and it's still impressive. From the puppetry, the animatronics, and most importantly the choreography. I can't imagine doing most of the stunts in the film in those heavy costumes.

More importantly, this movie, more than even the 1987 series, set the blueprint for much of the franchise going forward. Particularly with Raphael who goes from wisecracking jokester to the more angsty and violent of the bunch. It also gave us the definitive Casey Jones as Elias Koteas' more cocky version, which is a step up in many ways from Dirty Harry in a mask. It also gives us a rare sight, an intimidating Shredder! Well, until the sequel. The story itself flows really well too, never feeling too slow or too dull. Giving a strong emphasis particularly on family, from the foot clan being wayward teenagers who look to Shredder as a father figure, to particularly a family of a four anthropomorphic turtles and a rat. Hell, I think the most far fetched thing about this movie is Domino's pizza that looks that good. If you haven't watched it, it's worth a watch. If you have, give it a rewatch.
