The 2nd Connecticut Raw show opens with many of the entrants of the Intercontinental Championship battle royal in the ring. Vince McMahon and Bobby Heenan are at ringside, no Macho Man since he's one of the entrants. Most of the superstars enter the ring as we go to break including the Quebecers, Adam Bomb, and Razor Ramon. The last entrant is of course "Macho Man" Randy Savage, who comes out to a great pop.
Savage hits some axe handles to Gonzalez as the match begins. Many of the superstars focus on the giant as they manage to throw him out first. Not only is this Gonzalez's elimination form the match, but this will be his last Raw appearance as he'll be released shortly after this edition. Can't say I'll honestly miss him, as the few matches I've seen him in were all pretty terrible.
Lots of back and forth with no elimination for a while. Lots of focus on trying to get rid of Macho Man, but no avail at this point in time. Mabel rakes the eyes of Tatanka, with a nice bit of drool pouring out of his mouth. Razor almost eliminates Jacques, but is unable. IRS is almost thrown out, but manages to survive. Mabel is the next elimination thanks to Diesel. Razor tosses IRS over the top rope. Jacques tries an elimination, but he survives. Bastion Booger tosses the 1-2-3 Kid.
Diesel tries to eliminate Mr. Perfect, but Perfect coutners, tossing out Diesel before the break. When we return, we see Bob Backlund eliminated. Next up is Jimmy Snuka eliminated by Rick Martel. Bam Bam Bigelow throws out Mr. Perfect. Marty is the next elimination thanks to Adam Bomb. Tatanka chops at Bam Bam, but gets thrown over the top rope. MVP's paint is coming off at this point, and he's going full Brooklyn Brawler.
Macho Man throws out Bastion Booger. Razor gets tossed out by Bam Bam, but not over the top rope. Enraged, Razor hits a hard clothesline sending Bam Bam out as we go to yet another commercial break. Eight entrants remain at this point. MVP is eliminated by Owen Hart. Owen is tossed out by Jacques. Six men left as the four heels conspire to eliminate Razor and Macho, as Razor and Macho seemingly have to work together.
Quebecers attack Razor as Martel and Adam Bomb go after Savage. Eventually Macho Man manages to throw out Adam Bomb. Bomb holds the leg, as the Quebecers toss Macho Man over the top rope. Now the three remaining heels focus on Razor as he tries to fight out of the corner. Nice axe handle by Martel on Razor. The trio slap Razor around. They whip Razor, but he grabs the rope, avoiding a triple dropkick.
The heels come back and beat him around for a while, to the point where it's barely an attempt at elimination at this point. Razor fights back, but gets a double slam by Jacque and Pierre. However, a miscommunication causes Pierre to knock Jacques over the top rope, and Razor follows suit by tossing out Jacques. This makes the winners of the match Razor Ramon and Rick "The Model" Martel. They'll face off next week for the vacated Intercontinental title.
Overall, a pretty decent battle royal. Felt like it took a while to get underway, and I will say it wasn't until the end that we got the more interesting eliminations, but for what it was it was a fun match, and a great way to open Raw. Not to mention, it really helps build the importance of the Intercontinental Title right now. Everyone wants it. Unlike today's WWE where it's literally become an albatross to people's careers. Here it actually does feel like the belt right below the world title. Hopefully Razor and Martel deliver next week, and knowing how good both men are, I'm sure we're in for a treat.
Jim Cornette and the Heavenly Bodies are in the ring as we return to the ring. I love you Bobby, but shut up when Jimmy's talking. Mark Thomas and Scott Taylor are their opponents for this week. Thomas and Tom Pritchard start off, as Pritchard takes out the knee of Thomas. Tag to Del Rey as we get a back suplex/moonsault combination. Bobby Heenan mentions that the Rock and Roll Express will debut on All American Wrestling this week. Tags to Scott Taylor and Pritchard. Slingshot by Del Rey who is back in.
Nice elbow by Del Rey, who tags back in Pritchard who hits a spinebuster off the top turnbuckle to Taylor. Nice vertical suplex and an enziguri as Pritchard tags back in Del Rey. Both men hit a double suplex as Cornette shouts out Scott Taylor. Tags back and forth as Del Rey gets a DDT (off a clothesline by Pritchard which just looks odd) and a double superkick to Thomas and Taylor for the win. Overall, a solid squash. The Heavenly Bodies are a really good tag team. Honestly I think they're criminally underrated.
We're taken back to last week's Superstars as Doink confronted both Bam Bam Bigelow and Luna Vachon with two buckets. He throws the bucket of confetti at Biglow, but puts the water bucket on the head of Luna. Essentially, the clown's looking for a death sentence.
Speaking of Doink, he's up next for our last match of the show against Cory Student. Gone is the evil clown music for his more well remembered babyface music. It still appears to be Matt Borne under the paint for now. He comes to the ring on a red wagon with a garbage bag filled with cotton candy and other goodies that he throws to the crowd. While it's far from being to the level of insufferable yet, I already dislike the very concept of a babyface Doink. The character worked much better as an evil clown other than a goofy babyface.
Doink has a bucket and turns his attention to Bobby Heenan. But the bucket this week is just filled with popcorn. The match begins as Doink lays in shots to Student, and hits a nice back body drop. Hiptoss and a dropkick follows. Doink is in full control with a chop and a belly to belly suplex. Doink finishes the match with a powerslam and his seated senton off the rope. The Whoopee Cushion gets the three.
Bam Bam and Luna head to ringside and confront Doink. Officials try to keep Bam Bam from the clown, Since he can't crush the clown, he turns his attention to Doink's wagon, and proceeds to stomp on it. He completely destroys it, which is a shame as it had only one day left until retirement. It's safe to say Doink has pissed off the wrong big man. But Doink laughs it off because he's a certified maniac.
We end Raw by replaying the end of the battle royal as we hype the Razor Ramon/Rick Martel Intercontinental Title match next week.
Overall, a very fine edition of Raw. A solid battle royal took up most of the show, and the two squash matches were fine television. I like the build to this I.C title match for next week, I really enjoy the Heavenly Bodies as a tag team, and this feud between Doink and Bam Bam has been pretty good so far. A good way to start Doink's face run in the WWF. So for a rating I give this Raw an B+. Not the most amazing show, but more than enough to enjoy.
