Raw opens this week with Marc Mero taking on Great Value Diesel. Yes, the big red dentist is making his Raw debut, accompanied to the ring by Jim Ross. He heads to the announce table as "Diesel" takes Mero to the corner and lays in knees as the crowd boo. Mero recovers and dropkicks "Diesel" to the outside. He follows with a diving cross body that was pretty sloppy. He follows with a slingshot splash and a cover for two. Diesel reverses a whip and presses Mero into the ropes.
"Diesel" does the basic Diesel spots to boos while Kevin Kelly and Lawler mention how Jim Ross is under investigation over this fake pairing. Jim says he's trying to create a more competitive environment and the winners will be the fans. Lawler says Monsoon is trying to void the contracts. Cut to backstage where "Razor" is going to take a closer look as we go to break. When we return, "Diesel" is still in full control until Mero rolls him up for two. Clothesline from "Diesel" ends that attempted recovery.
Mero avoids a leg drop as "Razor" makes it to ringside. Headscissors, a kneelift and a clothesline to the outside. He then hits a plancha to "Razor". "Razor" and "Diesel" then double team Mero, causing a DQ. They continue to beat down until "Diesel" lands a jackknife.
Undertaker is still busy digging that grave. He promises that Mankind's existence is nearly finished on this earth. All that's left is to fill this grave with his rotting, maggot-infested carcass. He won't have a nice day and sure won't rest in peace.
Next up, The New Rockers face off with The Smoking Gunns. Before that, we get a Sid promo as he promises that tonight Goldust is going to dance with the devil, because he is the master and ruler of the world.
"Sunny" chants since she's still without them. She is on the line however as she says that she might bring them back, should they win the titles against Owen and Bulldog. She's far less happy about having Ahmed Johnson as a guest on Livewire. Very basic ringwork early on. Headlock by Marty is broken, but he still gets a roll up for two. Cradle by Marty gets a two. Backslide attempt still just gets a two. Tag to Billy who regains control with a clothesline. Jim takes this time to talk about Vince's ego while Bart chases Marty, only to eat a clothesline from Leif.
Double rights by Leif and Marty as Leif is legal. Cover only gets a two. Lawler brings up his match next week with Jake Roberts, but he doubts it'll happen because Jake has fallen off the wagon. Marty is brought back in and hits a fist drop. Tag to Leif as they hit a double hip toss and some stomps. Bart fights back, but Leif hits a knee and tags to Marty. Billy gets a boot in on Marty and tags in. More "Sunny" chants as Billy gets in. After a double team by the Gunns, Billy gets tossed over the ropes by Marty. Tags on both ends, but Billy trips up Leif, allowing for a Sidewinder to get the win for the Gunns in a basic match.
We get an interview with WWE music director Jim Johnson and "The Real Double J" Jesse James. James says he doesn't hate Jarrett, but Jarrett is not the world's greatest entertainer. Not even close. He can't dance or sing. That's not saying he can, but he thinks he can. They recap the incidents at In Your House 2, the successful concert, but the far less successful defense againt Shawn Michaels, as the mistake by Roadie cost Jarrett the IC title. They then hype a second part where Jesse James offers Jarrett a roadie job.
Goldust quotes Psycho as he hypes up his match with Sycho Sid later tonight.
Jim Ross interviews Vader and Jim Cornette, still high on their win in last week's tag team match. Ross shills the match between Vader and Sid at In Your House to face Shawn at Survivor Series. Cornette is pissed, because Vader should get the win by proxy, but the WWF is protecting Shawn because he's the cash cow. Cornette, of course, shills Shawn in Playgirl. Cornette promises that Sid will be buried at In Your House, promising to beat Sid with the powerbomb. And then, Vader will go to Survivor Series to be the WWF Champion.
Up next, The Sultan is in action against Aldo Montoya. Backlund on commentary, which means insanity. They shill Stone Cold Steve Austin against Shawn Michaels for the next episode of Raw. Aldo avoids Sultan and lands some dropkick. Backlund says that he can't hear without his glasses on as he puts on shades, but he promises championships. Lawler tries to make a "Sunglasses at Night" joke, and Backlund loses it and says he has to cover his eyes because they don't want him telling people to not take drugs (???). They try to talk to him again, but Backlund gives them the silent treatment. Back in the ring, Sultan is in control, throwing Montoya into the corners, then hitting a belly to back suplex. Camel Clutch gets the win.
Mankind promo as he doesn't want to be buried alive. He then falls into the grave and panics, saying the grave is too short for the Undertaker.
Main event up next. Goldust facing Sycho Sid. Sid coming to the ring to a deafening pop. sneak attack by Goldust, who then hits a clothesline. Corner punches, followed by a bit of grinding. This allows Sid to catch him and lands an inverted atomic drop and a pair of clotheslines. Chokeslam is teased, but he goes for a powerbomb instead, but Goldust escapes. Marlena distracts Sid, allowing Goldust to regain control, suplexing Sid into the rope.
Shawn Michaels on the line saying that he's in a world of trouble depending on who wins between Sid and Vader at In Your House. When it comes to Stone Cold, he seems confident. Goldust remains in control of Sid, as Jim Cornette makes it to commentary. Powerslam by Goldust as we go to break. When we return, Sid is back in control, landing a chokeslam. He signals the Powerbomb and lands it. Cover and the three for Sid.
Post-match, Vader attacks Sid, slamming him and lands a splash. Sid then goes full Hogan and no-sells it. Sid lands a chokeslam. Vader no-sells and retreats. Sid plays to the crowd to end the first Raw of October.
This was a pretty by-the-books edition of Raw. Some minor build to In Your House with primary focus on Sid Vs Vader, but other than that, it was pretty bland stuff. "Diesel" and Mero was okay, as Kane actually is fine doing all the Diesel mannerisms. Gunns and Rockers was fine, but a bit dull. Backlund is still as manic and fun as ever. And the main event of Goldust and Sid was fine, but way too brief. Overall, it leaves us with a forgettable edition that was an easy sit through at the very least. C.
