Rapidly Reviewing Sonic SatAM Episode 25: Spy Hog

We open the penultimate Sonic episode once again in Robotropolis as Uncle Chuck continues his spying. Unfortunately this time he almost gets caught by Snively. Luckily since he can still act like a robot, he gets out of the situation, and is still able to meet with Sonic. His latest info is on the planned building of the tankers for the doomsday project. Sonic is concerned that Uncle Chuck will be caught eventually, but he's certain that he'll be fine.

Uncle Chuck later informs the freedom fighters about the tanker convoy leaving at dawn, so they arrive to put a stop to it. While sonic distracts them, they others hang underneath to extract the tanker. Sally nearly falls off, but Antoine (yes, Antoine) actually saves her from being caught. Even Robotnik realizes that the distraction was a setup and the swat bots return to the tanker convoy. Sonic uses a power ring to come back to his friends in time to make the save.

Robotnik is also starting to suspect that there's a spy around informing the freedom fighters of their plans. He has himself and Snively use face masks to keep their conversations from being spied on. In other words, he's actually using logic. Meanwhile, Antoine is doing what Antoine always does when he makes a quick save. And that's gloat his head off. It doesn't help that Sally gives him some more praise for his rescue, even giving him a kiss. Yeah, that's going to work.

Rotor's been busy despite his lack of use this season as he's not only rebuilt one of Robotnik's ships to use, but a robot bird and a security transponder. In other words, the freedom fighters are finally starting to get some useful tools to deal with Robotnik. Speaking of Robotnik, they manage to find the bug. His plan is to make the bug malfunction, forcing the spy to replace it, and thus their trap will be set.

Sally and Bunny arrive in the construction area of the doomsday project to download the plans of the device. They also discover that Robotnik is on to Uncle Chuck's bug. Meanwhile Sonic and Uncle Chuck end up falling for that very same trap. Sally sends the info back to knothole to go on to warn Uncle Chuck, and that job falls to... Antoine.

Oh dear.

Unfortunately neither Antoine or Dulcy can find "Uncle Chunk" at his hideout, so Antoine chooses to go it alone. So we're back to full ego trip Antoine. Wonderful. He manages to find Uncle Chuck and goes to follow, despite his paranoia. He does find Uncle Chuck, but...

It wouldn't be Antoine if he doesn't get himself caught.

Snively believes that Antoine is the spy and uses the one thing that will break the dupe's sprits. And thus comes one of the best moments in the series as Sively begins his interrogation skills. And that's by horrible cooking. Making bad Crepes Suzette, and the real killer, escargot with margarine. This moment is just worth it with how over the top both Charlie Adler and Rob Paulsen are during this scene.

However, Antoine is saved by Sonic before he tells everything. But Antoine is still more concerned about the escargot. Meanwhile, Uncle Chuck's location is finally found out and Uncle Chuck ends up caught. Sonic takes the crying Antoine as he goes back for Uncle Chuck, only to find him already captured. Robotnik begins to reprogram him back again, but Uncle Chuck continues to fight it. Thankfully Sonic makes the save in time before Knothole's location is told. Sonic tells Uncle Chuck to return to Knothole, but Uncle Chuck had planned this situation.

With a change of attire, he still plans to stay around to finish his spying. He says his goodbyes to the others while Sonic is still unhappy with Chuck staying.

Another excellent episode. Not as action heavy as the past few, but the story is finally giving off a great feeling of finality as the doomsday project is near completion and Uncle Chuck's spy days seem to be numbered. But the best part of this episode, as previously mentioned, is the interrogation scene. I think one of the reasons I enjoy Antoine as much as I do is how over the top Rob Paulsen can play him. And this may have been his finest hour as he has a panic attack over margarine on escargot. Just a perfect moment of levity in what now feels like a more serious situation. I do think we tread a bit back to other episodes with Antoine's ego and Uncle Chuck's refusal to return to Knothole, but they don't hurt this episode.

Everything is building up perfectly to what will be the grand finale of Sonic SatAM. Whether the writers wanted it to be or not. So tune in next time for the grand finale of Rapidly Reviewing Sonic SatAM as the freedom fighters take on The Doomsday Project.
