Rapidly Reviewing Sonic SatAM Episode 22: The Odd Couple/Ro-Becca

It's time for the second of the dual Antoine episodes. Last time we had Antoine deal with a cannibal biker gang and give tails a ghostly encounter. What's next for our favorite French bumbler? Find out as we take a look at "The Odd Couple" and "Ro-Becca".

We open "The Odd Couple" as Sonic and Antoine are trying to help Dulcy land in Knothole during a snowstorm. Antoine, as always, is being his helpful self, not exactly helping Sonic guide Dulcy to a safe landing. And his bad directions cause Dulcy to do what she always does.

Crash in spectacular fashion.

With some of the huts taken out from Dulcy's crash, and the storm causing an issue with any rebuilding. this means that there needs to be some unfortunate roommates. In this case, Sonic and Antoine. And, you can see where this goes pretty quick. Antoine is the OCD-addled clean one while Sonic is a complete slob. Even some muddy footprints causes him to have a panic attack.

Ant's cleanliness issues leads to him tossing the shoes out, which due to the storm causes more snow to come in. It also doesn't help matters that Sonic is a noisy cook, not to mention his chili dogs making an even bigger mess. Not to mention that Sonic enjoys some sleep fighting.

Eventually it's enough for Antoine to lose his mind completely, or what little mind he had left. That's enough for Sonic to leave. Until, as fate would have it, Antoine's hut gets smashed by a tree. I guess that means he has to shack up with Sonic somewhere else? I don't know, as the short is at an end.

We open "Ro-Becca" as Rotor is busy building a robot woman. Why exactly? Especially considering the freedom fighters have spent the majority of the series fighting robots? I don't know, plot convenience I guess. Rotor goes to get a screwdriver from Sonic, which Antoine is conveniently helping him with this robot woman job.

Rotor returns as Antoine tries to get himself out of his job with a leg injury caused by a box he brought up rom the basement. Things don't get better as he, shocker of shockers, accidentally turns on the machine, that brings the robot to life. And since Antoine was the first one she sees, she becomes infatuated with him. He runs off in terror as she gives chase.

Antoine continues to try to hide from the robot while she chases after him, while Rotor and Sonic are also looking for the both of them. This leads to more suffering as he ends up messy, pained, sick, and even electrocuted. Eventually, he gets caught by the robot, who promises to make him feel better.

She feeds him a delicious meal of "metal-stroni", and gives him what appear to be rather invasive massages. Rotor finally cuts the power to the robot and reprograms her to be his assistant. This however, leads her to just repeat what he says. After Rotor leaves, she returns to Antoine. Ant finally realizes that his good looks are to blame and Rotor goes to dismantle her. In fact, Antoine now goes into full arrogance overdrive and speaks with a bad Arnold Schwarzenegger accent. This is enough for "Ro-Becca" to be repulsed, causing her to run away.

However, she quickly bounces back on Sonic. But Sonic quickly escapes, leading the problem to come right back to Antoine. Wah-Wah indeed.

These were definitely the weaker of the Antoine filler shorts for sure. Where there was a lot of story packed within "Fed Up With Antoine" and "Ghost Busted" for both of the episodes here, they felt like they moved really fast with really no substance whatsoever. In fact, both feel more like weird Antoine torture porns than anything resembling what we've gotten throughout Sonic SatAM. "The Odd Couple" in particular moved at a break neck pace, with a lot of the cliches you expect from that kind of story. The redeeming part of it however was having Rob paulsen screaming like a maniac, I guess. "Ro-Becca" had a bit more substance to it, but was still nothing amazing. There was no real character to the robot other than just being a "rule 64 Pepe Le Pew". Why Rotor is making a female robot assistant still seems too far fetched for even Sonic cartoons and the plot feels lacking in any amazing moments. Overall, these two were big let downs. But now that we've moved on from the comedy, we have four more episodes left of Sonic SatAM to go, and next time we're dealing with wolves.
