We open in the great forest as it's being attacked by this monstrosity. A robot named "The Shredder" with saw blades and laser beams that can destroy trees. According to Snively, the energy can be used to power a "Sonic Radar". But before it can do mor damage, Sonic shows up to take it on. Sonic mocks the robot and dodges the shredder's attacks while the other Freedom Fighters watch on. Antoine being especially salty today, saying that Sonic is acting like a "complete fuel".
Good thing for Sonic that the shredder may be Robotnik's most incompetent robot yet as it is easily defeated by itself along with the friendly fire of the swat bots. Later that night at Knothole Village, the rest of the freedom fighters cheer Sonic for his amazing exploits, even getting some more romantic sarcasm tennis with Sally.
The only one still not celebrating is Antoine, who is getting tired of Sonic getting all the glory. He sulks at the power ring lake as he tries to get an answer as to what he needs to do to get the attention of Sally. Rotor jokingly suggests capturing Robotnik and taking him to Knothole. Now any knowledgeable character would take that as a joke.
Antoine of course takes that as a challenge.
His attempt at a stealth mission goes as well as you'd expect for Antoine. He makes a lot of noise and is quivering like the coward he is. He gets easily caught by a stealth bot as well. With a direct link to Robotnik, he tells Robotnik that he has a power ring that he'll give to him at the city limits. The caveat being no swat bots. So at the very least Antoine has everything planned out quite well. but since he's so nervous that he can barely hold on to the power ring, this already feels like he's wrapping his neck into the noose he made for Robotnik.
Sonic goes to find Antoine and quickly learns about what he's done. Meanwhile, Antoine meets with Robotnik.
And Robotnik surprisingly falls for Ant's trap. I got to admit, maybe Antoine is smart. That, or Robotnik literally fell for the easiest trap in the book. Maybe this plan will work out after a-
Nope, never mind. Ant's still screwed!
Robotnik gets the power ring and captures Antoine. Meanwhile Sonic learns about Rotor's poor choice of words with Antoine which caused this whole mess to begin with. At first Sonic isn't that concerned with going to rescue him, which is kind of cold even for Sonic. Plus he isn't too worried about Robotnik having a power ring since he can't use it. Sally eventually tells him that he could still learn the secrets. Since there's no other ring for 24 hours, Sonic decides to save the day without it.
Robotnik uses the power ring in his Sonic radar to detect Sonic's location. He uses a laser that automatically whallops Sonic at every turn. Robotnik sends the swat bots to finish the job, while he sends Antoine to be roboticized. Sonic evades the bots, while forced to now walk his way to Robotropolis. Interesting how this is the second Sonic episode where the focus becomes Sonic having to not use his speed to save the day.
When Sonic makes it to Robotropolis he sees that Robotnik has fixed the shredder and is going with it to make sure it gets the job done. But Sonic's first focus is to save Antoine. Befoer Ant can get blasted with the roboticizer, Sonic saves him just in time. Antoine apologizes for his action. He tells Sonic of the radar and the shredder. Sonic decides to use his speed despite the situation.
No, I take it back. Robotnik is dumber than Antoine.
So with his machine destroyed twice and the two responsible cornered. Robotnik decides he's just gonna kill them. Antoine hands Sonic the power ring, as Robotnik stupidly blasts the radar. This really is one of his stupider days. And we end with Antoine bring up just how brave he was. Yeah, he's exaggerating as always, and even the other freedom fighters don't believe him (save for maybe Tails), but screw it. Let him have this moment.
This was a better episode than even I remembered. If anything, it was the best use of Antoine since the series began. I have ragged in the reviews about why they bring him on missions, but I know it's because he's the comic relief and for the most part he works well. And when he's the focus of the story built around the collapse of his hubris, it works. It is kind of fun to see the mess he gets himself into. As for the rest of the episode, this was a better animated episode, despite a couple errors as usual (mainly with eyes). It's always good to see Robotnik more heavily involved with an episode as he is always such a great villain. This feels like the most he's gotten his hands dirty with since we've started.
On the downside, I will say I wasn't too fond of Sonic being less concerned with Antoine as that feels out of character even for him (and yes, even if he and Antoine don't get along). I will say that having Robotnik be stupid enough to destroy both his devices in the end also felt a bit lame. Those nitpicks aside, this was another in what has been some more consistently good episodes for the series.
