Rapidly Reviewing Sonic SatAM Episode 4: Ultra Sonic

Well, I kinda shirked this project of for a while, didn't I? Yes, other projects came in the way of this review retrospective for Sonic SatAM and I apologize to those who may actually have had interest in seeing the reviews continue. But I can officially announce that from here on in, the Sonic SatAM retrospective is back and the goal is to complete the series by the end of 2016. And considering that's roughly just over two and a half months away, we better get moving. And the best way to do so is to get right into the fourth episode, Ultra Sonic.

We open once again in Robotropolis as Sonic and Sally are on yet another mission. This time around it involves trying to disable the roboticizer. In a vent above the roboticizer Sally disables the alarm, though she does feel there could easily be a backup. However the biggest challenge is to get to the software to deactivate it.  Sonic is cocky as always, which leads to some more sarcasm tennis between the do. Eventually they get serious and try to sabotage the machine.

This causes the two to get caught easily by Robotnik and Snively. They use the fire extinguishers to try to get the two out of hiding. Sonic and Sally however use the foam from the extinguishers to make their escape, commandeering a ship to avoid the swat bots.  However, the ol' hedgehog hubris ends up nearly getting them killed. The swat bots are focused on trying to capture the two, not kill them. They manage an escape at the abandoned subway which is also surrounded by swat bots.

But it's seeing his roboticized Uncle Chuck that starts to make Sonic act more reckless... well, more reckless than he usually is in this show. Sally manages to calm him down, and tells him that they need a plan. They learn that Uncle Chuck is headed to a crystal mine. They also finally reunite with the other freedom fighters. And yes, Antoine is there to be... well, Antoine. Sonic is now no longer focused on the roboticizer and more on rescuing Uncle Chuck. They take a conveniently placed tram ad make their way to the mines.

They spot Uncle Chuck, and Sonic tries to get him to recognize him, that doesn't work too well as Robo-Chuck goes on the attack. As established in "Heads or Tails" with Muttski, roboticized creatures can retain their memories, but aren't able to fight the control of Robotnik for too long. So, while Sonic barging in is reckless, it's easy to see why he could think that he could just jog Uncle Chuck's memories so easily. Bunnie manages to grab Uncle Chuck as Sonic is still focused on fixing the issue. Sally's best idea is to try to use the power rings Chuck invented to fix him.

It manages to work, as Chuck regains his memories of everyone. Sonic tries to take Uncle Chuck back to Knothole, but Uncle Chuck wants them to deal with an issue at the mines first.  This issue being a gigantic energy crystal. If it's removed, it will destroy the ecosystem.  Best strategy is to disable the controls. However, while they're planning, Uncle Chuck is already losing control of his senses.

As Sally, Rotor and Antoine deal with the controls, Sonic, Bunnie and Uncle Chuck have to contend with a Dino-Bot, a gigantic tanklike robot. The only way to defeat it is from inside as they  enter the bot in hopes to control  it. Meanwhile, the other three manages to make it to the control room, while dealing with trying to deactivate a bot. Sally and Rotor manage to do so, while Antoine mistakes the word Bingo with Gringo. ... why is he on this mission again?

Sonic and the others gain control of the dino-bot just as the crystal is being raised. They get close to snapping the cables, but the swat bots manage to hold down the dino-bot. Luckily there's a convenient laser drill, but that proves useless too as the crystal absorbs it. They blast the cables, but the swat bots keep the bot down.  All they have left is one last blast, which finally manages to sends the crystal crashing to the ground.

Everyone makes their escape as the swat bots continue their attack. However, the power ring keeping Uncle Chuck sane is conveniently running out of power at this exact moment. Sonic wants to take him back, but it's too late as he's back to full robot. Much to Sonic's distress, he's forced to leave him behind. Sally promises to save him eventually as they can someday fix everyone Robtonik has roboticized. Even Cat... maybe. If anyone even remembers that guy.

Ultra Sonic is a pretty good episode. It's definitely the most emotional to this point. I mean, you won't shed tears over it, but you do feel bad for Sonic by the end. You can also understand why he becomes so impetuous throughout the mission as he focus is more on saving Uncle Chuck than anyone else really. As for Uncle Chuck, he's a very likable character... or at least the version you get when he's not full robot. There are some good action settings with the dino-bot and the scene with Sonic and Sally trying to evade the swat bots. Not much on really good humor though as Antoine's misunderstandings do tend to grate. Other than that, no complaints. A solid continuation to the adventure is within Ultra Sonic.
