We open our episode with what appears to be a friggin' UFO. It's particular target is a group of wolf freedom fighters. Back at Robotropolis, Robotnik is still admiring his upcoming doomsday project, but when Snively warns him that the wolves destroyed his UFO (or test pod if you will), it angers him greatly. Robotnik tells Snively to seek out the wolves and get his test pod back online.
It turns out Robotnik isn't the only one looking for the wolf tribe as Sonic and company are also trying to find them. Nicole gives them the info on the wolves (still talking in "Sonic Speak" since the void). Sonic runs off on his own to seek out the wolves, whle dealing with some horrible Robotnik pollution and some strange weather. Particularly lightning clouds. The freedom fighters try another route, but appear to be in a dead end, until Antoine of all people manages to find a secret entrance. I guess he is useful enough in this one.
Nah, he's about the same.
Trapped in the cave, Sonic runs off again to check ahead. Despite Sally's constant statements to stay together, he continues to ignore her. Antoine is being useful by being a coward, concerned about a curse. One of the wolves finally arrives to bring the trio to a trap door. This brings them to Lupe and her team of wolf pack freedom fighters.
Lupe tells them about how their land was destroyed by Robotnik and roboticized all but ten of the wolves. They've recently been dealing with the test pod that we saw earlier in the episode. Sonic tells Lupe of the freedom fighter list, and she says she'll help in spreading the message. They've also been collecting some machinery that might help in dealing with the test pod. A cannon that needs repairing. Fortunately that's a department that Sally's an expert at. Speaking of which, Snively is being yelled at by Robotnik to get the test pod running and find the wolves. It really hasn't been a good few days for Snively.
And that's exactly what goes down. The wolf pack is being forced back into hiding by the heat sensors from Snively's ship while the test pod is polluting everything it passes. Sonic places some charges on the walls, while the wolves return from hiding to blast the pod with their fixed cannon, while the explosives bury it in rubble. It seems like the day is saved already, but it turns out that the pod's going to need more firepower to take it out.
Sonic uses the power ring to create a tornado to send the pod crashing into Snively. This really hasn't been the poor guy's day. However, that proves fruitless too as the pod is still flying. Robotnik turns out to be a lot smarter than Snively in this factor as he discovers the hidden caves and blasts forward. Sally tells Lupe and the others to lead the swat bots to the hideout, and she and Sonic let themselves be caught.
They easily defeat Snively and get the plans to finally defeat the pod by luring it into the lightning clouds. This is enough to fry the pod once and for all. As they celebrate, Lupe informs them that the other freedom fighters have agreed to meet with them and join the fight against Robotnik's doomsday project.
Well, that was easy.
Cry of the Wolf was a decent episode that continues the season's overall arc of the impending doomsday project. However, I do feel that the episode feels very rushed. While Lupe and the wolves make for an interesting group, we don't really get enough time with them for the pack to really make much of an impact, mainly since we have to deal more with the whole test pod situation. Antoine gets a bit annoying in this one, concerned over a curse and whining about it for the whole episode. And I do feel like having the freedom fighter groups already form by the end of the episode really does end up feeling underwhelming. But with only three episodes left in the season, I can see why they had to do it. Overall, while there was really nothing keeping this from being a terrible episode, it just ends up feeling like it lacks something to make it hold up like some of the other ones this season.
